Singapore Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan’s Local and International Affairs Committee organised the first Teochew Entrepreneur Award 2016 to celebrate and promote successful Teochew entrepreneurs who have contributed largely to our business community, our economy, and also our social community. It is also supported by IE Singapore, Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, SPRING Singapore and Action Community for Entrepreneurship.

Danny Yeo was handpicked to be the master of ceremony to host the significant and grand occasion.

The Guest of Honour for the night was Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam. When DPM Tharman went onstage, he praised Pure Talents emcee Danny Yeo for being impressively bilingual. DPM Tharman also made a rousing speech starting off with fluent greetings in Mandarin and Teochew, earning a big round of applause from all guests.

Key members who made the event possible include Organising Chairman of Teochew Entrepreneur Award 2016, Mr Kenny Sim, President of Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan, Mr George Quek, as well as Vice-President of Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan and Chief Judge, Dato’ Seri Dr Derek Goh, BBM.

Entrepreneurship is important and vital to our livelihoods. It creates jobs, encourages global economic growth, and it is a leading source of innovation. All the winning entrepreneurs have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities: from building, to growing and contributing positively to the society. The recipients of the Teochew Entrepreneur Award were selected by a prestigious and independent panel of judges. The panel comprised of leading figures from the S’pore business community as well as government agencies. The judging panel were impressed with the many innovative practices from technology to productivity, as well as various strategic business directions.

The Teochew Entrepreneur Award 2016 has three award categories: Honorary Award, Prestige Award, and Promising Award.

The Honorary Award is the top category and the winner is a Prominent Teochew businessman, nominated by Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan, Founder and Chairman of Sin Heng Chan Group, 97-year-old Mr Eng Liat Kiang.

For the Promising Awards, the Entrepreneur must have been operating the business for at least 3 years with a turnover of at least $1 million but not exceeding $10 million, as well as having demonstrated outstanding entrepreneurial qualities in developing the business. There were 12 Promising Award winners.

For the Nexia TS Prestige Awards, the Entrepreneur must have been operating the business for at least 5 years with at least a turnover of $10 million, as well as having demonstrated outstanding entrepreneurial qualities in developing and growing the business. There were 16 Prestige Award winners.

There were three Grand Winners in each of the two categories as well.
