World Intellectual Property (IP) Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries to raise awareness of IP. It is held in respect of contributions by creative artists and innovators worldwide, a celebration of creativity and all things creative. In fact, IP is a prominent and pervasive part of our lives, and we all get to play a part in the creative process: we are buying someone’s IP, appreciating someone’s IP, using someone’s IP and also creating our own IP when we produce something of our own.
Singapore World IP Day championed the theme of “Respecting and Caring with IP” in 2014. The event held at Bugis Square had an exciting line-up of outstanding performers including The Sam Willows, MICapella, Jack and Rai, Taufik Batisah and YouTube sensation Jason Chen.
The evening programme started with an open audition for Michelle Chong’s upcoming new movie and saw hilarious performances by people from all walks of life who came for a shot at stardom.
To celebrate this year’s special edition of World IP Day, Adelyn Koh, a special guest from Singapore Association of Visually Handicapped (SAVH) opened the evening show with a song from her self-composed album. She was later surprised with a special gift – a one-year specially-tailored song-writing programme with music institution Ocean Butterflies. Mr Tan Yih San, IPOS Chief Executive, presented her with this gift under a IPOS flagship public outreach programme – the Honour IP Alliance, or HIP Alliance. HIP Alliance is a tripartite collaboration amongst the public sector, private sector and our people to help bring IP closer to the community.
Over the years, IPOS has recognised IP creators who have made invaluable contributions to the IP scene and rendered strong support for original works. In 2014, the IP Ambassadorship Award was conferred to two talented individuals who have inspired their respective industries with their creativities. The recipients were Ms Jo Soh and Ms Michelle Chong.
Ms Jo Soh, owner and designer of Singaporean womenswear, Hansel, is the first fashion designer recognised as IP Ambassador. Her label has garnered many accolades and won many fans, including American pop star Katy Perry and Japanese actress Chiaki Kuriyama. Her brand, Hansel, staged its solo show at this year’s Audi Fashion Festival.
Ms Michelle Chong – director, scriptwriter, producer, host, actress – is a multi-talented, multi-hyphenated Singapore icon. Arguably our top female comic, she has won our hearts with her versatile comical portrayal of various characters in The Noose. Not contented with just being on screens, she stepped behind the camera to write and produce two movies. Already Famous was selected to represent Singapore at the Oscars’ Best Foreign Language Film category.
The night continued with performances from outstanding local artistes. The Sam Willows has performed on big stages including F1 Singapore Grand Prix and the Asia Style Collective alongside 2NE1 and Girls Generation. Taufik, MICappella as well as Jack and Rai followed on.
Taufik Batisah became a star when he was crowned our nation’s first Singapore Idol in 2004. A natural-born performer, he went on to win multiple awards, making him one of our region’s brightest talents.
MICappella have represented Singapore in several international events including Hong Kong Asian Pop-Music Festival 2013 where they shared the stage with Girl’s Generation. Most recently, in China’s reality TV competition, The Sing-Off China, they defeated tough opponents and emerged first runners-up.
Jack and Rai are perennial crowd pleasers as well as one of the most popular duos in Singapore. They co-hosted a show on Class 95 with Jean Danker and are currently resident musicians at Wala Wala Café Bar every Sunday night.
The final performer of the evening started out doing covers but has since gone on to write his own albums, creating waves across the globe. Jason Chen is a bilingual Taiwanese-American singer based in Southern California, he began to sing at age of 17, to ask a girl to prom. His first album “Gravity” (single “Best Friend”) has over 10 million views. Currently he has 3 English albums and a Chinese mix tape.
Event partners for Singapore World IP Day 2014 were Composers & Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS), Tiny Island Production, Cotton Planet, Five Izakuya and PlayImaginative. The event was managed by SPOC, Single Point of Contact Pte Ltd.
Beyond the night concert, IPOS would like to urge one and all to continue to embrace IP as our way of life. We should remember to respect and care for IP, as all of us have a part to play to ensure that creativity and innovation continue to thrive in Singapore.
