– Exclusive Media Preview of “The Merdeka Stories” Short Films

Pure Talents veteran emcee Danny Yeo was selected to host the soft launch and exclusive media preview of “The Merdeka Stories”, a short film anthology that pays tribute to Singapore’s Merdeka Generation.

This is a collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Information, mm2 Entertainment and the film industry. The four films titled “The Merdeka Stories” depict the lives of our Merdeka Generation – born in the 1950s – who grew up amidst the uncertainty of our nation’s formative years and how they built up Singapore’s defence, supported the nation’s industrialisation drive, set up homes and raised families, as well as rallied communities together. Exploring themes of resilience, duty, courage, entrepreneurship, the films look back at Singapore’s earlier years in a showcase of spirit and grit, and also how the Merdeka Generation continue to inspire current generations and shape the future.

Mr Ng Say Yong (Chief Content Officer of mm2 Entertainment) and Ms Karen Tan (Senior Director of Public Communications, Ministry of Communications and Information) shared more about their collaboration and the inspirations behind the films. Danny interviewed the screenwriter Jean Tay and the three directors present – Martin Hong, Wee Li Lin and Don Aravind – about their creative processes.

The four films in The Merdeka Stories are:
• The Soldier (Director: Martin Hong)
• The Mother (Director: Priscilla Ang Geck Geck)
• The Factory Girl (Director: Wee Li Lin)
• The Kampong (Director: Don Aravind)

The films will be released in cinemas, online, and on free-to-air television from 31 January 2019 onwards.
